Happy October! It's time to start decorating for Halloween!! It is also time to start thinking of your Halloween party food! My favorite Halloween recipe is the Pizza Skulls recipe on the blog. They are frightfully festive. I wanted to use the skull cake pan for something else, so I came up with these Chocolate Lava Skull Cakes. OMG! I LOVED how they turned out. I want to have a Halloween party just so I can serve these Chocolate Lava Skull Cakes. SO FUN!
These Chocolate Lava Skull Cakes are super easy to make. They only take about 5 minutes to whip up and they are ready to eat in about 15 minutes. There are only a few simple ingredients in these Chocolate Lava Skull Cakes. You probably have all the ingredients in your pantry right now. Chocolate chips, butter, eggs, powdered sugar and flour. These are staples in our house!
The most critical part of this whole recipe is greasing the Skull Cake Pan. There are so many nooks and crannies. You really need to make sure to get into all of them. I greased the pan with shortening and then went back with some cooking spray. The cakes came out perfectly! I had some stick in the pan when I only used shortening, so I suggest the shortening AND cooking spray method.
The other critical step in this recipe is to let the cakes cool for 3 minutes in the pan before turning them over. If you try to turn them over too soon, they might stick in the pan.
To get the cakes out of the pan, I put a sheet of parchment paper on a baking rack. I put the parchment paper and baking rack on the top of the pan and flipped it over. I lifted up the pan and they all came out perfectly. Carefully lift the skulls to your plate so they don't crack. You can also cut the parchment paper and place the cake on the parchment on your plate. Once you have the cake on your plate, just slide the parchment out from under the cake.
Serve the Chocolate Lava Skull Cakes with whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream.
